Variations in Anxiety & Panic Disorders
For some people, occassional anxiety and the rare panic attack are just part of life. For others, however, anxiety and panic disorders are either partially or even near totally debilitating for them.
According to NIMH (National Institute on Mental Health), of the 31% of US adults that experience anxiety disorders in their lives, over 33% are moderate and about 22% are deemed serious. Combined, that is over 10% of society!
Common types of anxiety disorders include:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Panic Disorder (Panic Attacks)
- Social Anxiety Disorder (Due to embarassment, self-consciousness, etc.)
- Agoraphobia (Fear of places & situations that cause anxiety)
- Various Phobias
- Anxiety Induced by Substances
The Bel Air Home most commonly works with patients suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder (Panic Attacks), however we do see patients with Social Anxiety & Phobias, and are certainly able to help.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks, etc…
The breakdown into the type/s of anxiety one experiences is not always clear-cut. In fact, some severe cases involve multiple types of anxiety, whereas one can oftentimes perpetuate the other.
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Persistently worrying and anxious, often on a daily basis. Day-to-day events, activities, and social functions, things that much of society views as ordinary, for this individual can cause a level of worry and distress to the point that it affects them physically. Generalized Anxiety Disorder can co-occur along with depression and other anxiety disorders.
- Panic Disorder: Can consist of repeated episodes of sudden feelings of overwhelming anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks). Panic attacks generate feelings of impending doom, chest pain, shortness of breath, or a rapid, fluttering, or pounding heart (heart palpitations). These panic attacks may lead to worrying about them happening again or avoiding situations in which they’ve occurred.
