Variations in Depression Disorders
If you search the internet for the different types of depression illnesses, you will find varying results, usually ranging from 6 to 10 types. The reason for this disparity has to do with new terminology vs. older terminology, and how they are grouped. In most cases, those requiring residential or inpatient treatment will be sufferring from either “Major Depression” or “Bipolar Disorder.”
According to SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), the varying types of depression are broken down as follows:
- Major/Clinical Depressive Disorder
- Bipolar Disorder (Previously termed Manic Depressive Illness)
- Persistent Depressive Disorder (Previously termed Dysthymia)
- Postpardum/Peripartum Depression
- Psychotic Depression
- Seasonal Affective Disorder
- Situational Depression (Non-clinical and not included in the SAMHSA list)
The Bel Air Home most commonly works with patients suffering from Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder. However, being a dual-licensed mental health program, which is not common among most treatment centers, we are also able to provide initial stabilization and treatment for patients suffering from Psychotic Depression.
Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder
As mentioned above, The Bel Air Home most commonly sees patients suffering from major depression and bipolar disorder. The two mental illnesses can be briefly described as follows:
- Major Depression: Sometimes referred to as Clinical Depression, this is the most common type. All cases are serious, however, for some people it can be all-consuming: and completely dominate their life, while for others it can present in more moderate forms, and to varying degrees depending on what the person is or is not doing at any given moment.
- Bipolar Disorder: A mental disorder that is characterized by shifts within the sufferer that include extreme emotional highs (hypomania) and opposing lows (depression). The lows can present common symptoms like, hopelessness, loss of interest, no energy, etc. And the highs can span from euphoria and abundance of energy, to abnormal irritability, short-temperedness, and other like symptoms. The occurrence of mood swings from highs to lows can be as rare as a few times a year, or as common as a few times per month.
